N50 Billion Lawsuit: KaaTruths Podcast Takes MTN, Airtel, Glo, DSTV to Court Over Consumer Rights

Aug 15, 2026

In a landmark lawsuit, KaaTruths Podcast has filed a case against MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Glo World, and MultiChoice DSTV at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The podcast is demanding N50 billion in general and special damages for alleged violations of consumer rights.

The lawsuit challenges the practice of allowing unused data bundles and subscriptions to expire, which the plaintiff argues is unfair, unreasonable, and contrary to consumers' rights.

For decades, millions of Nigerians have accepted this practice without questioning, but KaaTruths Podcast is seeking to change this. The company believes that when a consumer pays for a service, they should be

able to use it without fear of expiration or loss of value.

The lawsuit is not just about KaaTruths Podcast, but about the millions of Nigerian consumers who pay for services and are expected to bear the consequences when those services are unused, unavailable, or disrupted.

The defendants in the case are MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Globacom Limited, Airtel Networks Limited, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

The plaintiff is challenging situations where data expires even when the consumer could not properly use the service due to network disruptions or other service-related problems.

For instance, in one

incident, KaaTruths Podcast purchased an MTN data subscription for N30,000, which was billed to last 30 days. However, the router supplied for accessing the service developed a fault, and despite requests for cancellation, refund, or rollover of the unused subscription, the request was refused, and the subscription eventually expired.

In another incident, 75GB of data was said to have been exhausted in less than seven days, despite intermittent network disruption, and no satisfactory breakdown was provided to show how the 75GB was consumed.

KaaTruths Podcast is asking the Federal High Court to determine whether terms that allow unused data bundles to expire merely because a

stipulated period has elapsed are unfair, unreasonable, and contrary to consumers' rights.

The company is also challenging the absence of meaningful cancellation options in these subscription arrangements. Ultimately, KaaTruths Podcast is asking the Court for orders restraining these companies from continuing practices the Court finds unfair and unlawful.

The lawsuit is a significant step towards fighting for fairness in business and protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers. As the plaintiff stated, 'This is not a fight against business, but a fight for fairness in business.' The outcome of this lawsuit will have far-reaching implications for Nigerian consumers and businesses alike.
