Falconets set to clash with Spain in U‑20 Women’s World Cup opener

The Nigeria U‑20 women’s national team, popularly known as the Falconets, will take the field against defending champions Spain in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U‑20 Women’s World Cup.

The game is slated for Monday, 7 September, with a 4:00 p.m. (WAT) kick‑off at the stadium in Katowice, Poland.

The Falconets landed in Katowice on Saturday after a ten‑day training camp in Trzebnica, where head coach Moses Aduku and his technical team fine‑tuned tactics, fitness and set‑piece routines. Aduku, who steered the team to two World Cup finals in 2010 and 2014, told the media that the squad is “ready for the challenge against Spain and will approach the match with a strong winning mentality.”

Preparation for the tournament also included two friendly fixtures. The Falconets edged hosts Poland 1‑0, with Mary Mamudu scoring the decisive goal, before drawing 1‑1 with the Republic of Korea in their final warm‑up.

Those results gave the team a blend of defensive solidity and attacking sharpness that Aduku hopes will serve them well against a technically superior Spanish side.

Group F also features China PR and New Caledonia. After the Spain encounter, Nigeria will travel to face China on 10 September, before closing the group stage against New Caledonia on 13 September.

Historically, the Falconets have been two‑time runners‑up at this level, reaching the final in 2010 and 2014 but never clinching the trophy.

The current squad is determined to rewrite that narrative and start the campaign with a statement win. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that all logistics, including travel, accommodation and medical support, are in place for the team’s stay in Poland.

Fans back home have already begun to rally on social media, using hashtags #Falconets, #U20WWC and #NigeriaVsSpain to show support.

The match will be broadcast live on NTA Sports and streamed on the NFF’s official website, allowing millions of Nigerians to watch the young stars take on Europe’s best. With a disciplined defence, a creative midfield and a striker line that proved its bite in the warm‑ups, the Falconets hope to give Spain a tough test and keep their World Cup dreams alive.
