Marry a Liability or Marry a Financially Independent Woman and Risk Unsubmissiveness?

Aug 14, 2026

African men today are increasingly saying, "I don't want a liability. I want a woman who can take care of herself."

I understand the argument.

But I sometimes ask myself: if a woman is already financially independent, what exactly are you expecting to control in the marriage?

Before you get angry, hear me out.

In the traditional African family, the man was largely the provider. The woman depended on him financially, while she contributed by managing the home, raising children and supporting the family in other ways.

That financial dependence naturally created a certain level of dependence on the husband.

Today, however, many women rightly want financial independence.

She has her own salary.
Her own business.
Her own house.
Her own car.
Her own bank account.

And that

is not necessarily a bad thing.

But let's be honest, money gives people options in most cases.

A woman who completely depends on her husband may think twice before walking away from a marriage because her entire financial structure is connected to him.

A woman who earns ₦5 million every month, owns properties and has a successful business doesn't have to think twice.

She can say, "I don't need your money."

And that changes the dynamics.

So should a man marry a broke girl? Not necessarily.

A broke woman can become a terrible wife, but she can also become an incredible wife if she has the right character and the right man invests in her.

Give a woman ₦10 million to start a restaurant.

Help her acquire

a shop.
Give her the capital.
Let her run the business.

If she turns that ₦10 million into ₦50 million, you haven't created a liability.

You have helped build a woman who can build wealth with you.

But here is the risk.

The same woman you helped build may eventually become financially independent.

And when she becomes financially independent, her relationship with you may change.

This is where many men get confused.

Wealth changes people's options, and options can change behaviour.

But does financial independence automatically mean a woman will become disrespectful or unsubmissive?

No.

A woman can be wealthy and still respect her husband.

Likewise, a broke woman can be extremely disrespectful.

So perhaps the real issue isn't whether she is broke.

/> The real issue is what kind of woman she is before the money comes.

So men, if they have to choose, would rather marry a woman with good character, intelligence and loyalty and help her grow than marry a wealthy woman simply because she has money.

But some men also shouldn't deliberately keep thier wife financially dependent just to control her.

That's not marriage.
That's leverage.

So, African men, which would you choose?

Marry a broke girl— liability and build her or marry a financially independent woman and risk losing the traditional submissiveness you expect from an typical African wife?

Let's hear your comment on our social media platform. I suspect the women will have a very different answer.
