The Bauchi State Police Command released a press statement on its official Facebook page confirming the arrest of a 20‑year‑old man identified as Isiyaku Usman. According to the police, Usman is accused of defiling a seven‑year‑old girl in the state capital.

The statement says the suspect allegedly approached the child and persuaded her to follow him to a nearby uncompleted building that is still under construction. Inside the building, the police claim Usman took two mobile phones that belonged to the girl before allegedly committing a sexual assault.

mother reported the incident to the nearest police station. The officers swiftly located the suspect, who was apprehended without further incident. The police have placed Usman in custody and the case has been registered as a criminal investigation covering both defilement under the Children’s Act and theft under the Penal Code.

The Bauchi State Police Command emphasised that child protection remains a top priority for the force. In a short quote, the command said, “Isiyaku Usman allegedly lured the girl into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and allegedly sexually assaulted her.” The command added that they are working with

child welfare agencies to ensure the victim receives medical and psychological support.

The incident comes at a time when several northern states are grappling with a rise in reported cases of child abuse. Police chiefs across the region have called for stronger community policing and awareness campaigns to curb such crimes.

Legal experts note that the alleged defilement of a minor under Nigerian law can attract a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while the theft of the phones may add further penalties. The suspect will appear before a Bauchi State Magistrate Court within the next 48 hours for arraignment.

/> The police have urged anyone with further information about the case to contact the Bauchi State Police Command hotline. They also warned that false reports will be dealt with severely to protect the integrity of investigations.

While the investigation is ongoing, the police have not released further details about the identity of the victim or her family for privacy reasons. The public is reminded that reporting suspicious behaviour, especially involving children, can help prevent future tragedies.

This development underscores the continued effort by law enforcement agencies in Bauchi to enforce the law and protect vulnerable children from abuse and exploitation.
